    WEST SEATTLE ELEMENTARY

    Parent Involvement Policy 2018-2019

    1. This policy has been jointly developed and agreed upon by West Seattle Elementary and parents of students served in the school pursuant to Title I. West Seattle Elementary will convene an annual meeting, at a convenient time for parents to evaluate this policy.  This meeting will be held on November 27, 2018. The school’s parent involvement policy developed by West Seattle Elementary staff and parents will be distributed in an understandable and uniform format and to the extent practicable, in a language parents can understand. The parent involvement policy will also be made available to the community electronically on the school website, and in paper upon registration.

    2. West Seattle Elementary will involve parents in an organized, ongoing and timely way in the planning, review and improvement of Title I programs, school improvement plan and parent involvement policy. By providing parents the opportunity to take part in decision making, through Parent Booster Club meetings and ongoing communication, the goal is to increase the advocacy for school programs and this enhances student achievement.

    3. The school’s plan for including parents in the academic achievement of students will include but not be limited to the following:

    A.   Administration and staff will:

    1. Provide assistance to parents, as appropriate, in understanding such topics as the state’s academic content and achievement standards, state and local assessments, the requirements of Title I, how to monitor their student’s academic progress and how to work with school staff to improve the achievement of the student. This will be accomplished through the use of Open House, Monthly Parent Teas, and other informative nights, the school website, newsletters, parent –teacher conferences, Parent- Teacher - Student compacts, PBC/FEAT meetings, and any other means deemed necessary.

    2. Provide high-quality curriculum and instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment enabling students to meet the Common Core State Standards.

    3. Offer parent involvement activities in the school that will include opportunities for parents to volunteer and be involved in school activities:

    • Staff development and parent education
    • Parents to provide home support for their children’s education
    • Parents to participate in school decision-making
    • Effective communication between the school and parents.

    B.   In addition to the means discussed in item A, parents will be given an opportunity to fill out a survey regarding areas of need or concern. Based on the results of those surveys, meetings will be held to help parents work with their children to improve the student’s achievement in areas such as literacy and math trainings and using technology as appropriate, and to foster parental involvement. Furthermore, efforts will be made to provide access to educational resources for parents to use together with their children.

    C.   With regard to professional development, the administration will with the assistance of parents, educate teachers, pupil service personnel, principals and other staff in:

    • The value and utility of contributions of parents
    • How to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners.
    • Implementing and coordinating parent programs
    • Building ties between parents and the school.

    D.  Ensure that all information related to school and parent programs, meetings and other activities is sent to parents in a format and, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand.  This will be conducted through the website, ongoing newsletter, foreign language assistance where needed, and any additional avenues to be determined necessary.

    E .Coordination with other programs

    The administration will:

To the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parent involvement programs and activities, and conduct other activities such as family nights that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children.
