    Principal's Corner

Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! We are excited to begin the year with our wonderful West Seattle Elementary families. Due to the corona virus pandemic, students will begin the school year learning online at home using their computers. There will be no students at the school building. Although online learning is not ideal, we are committed to racial equity that leads to equitable access for all students. We are also committed to providing our students with high-quality instruction that promotes academic and social-emotional excellence.

We know that most of our families have a million different questions about what schooling will look like in September. The first day of school is September 4th for students in 1st-5th grades.  September 8th is the first day for preschool and kindergarten students. The school day will start at 8:30 am each morning for all students. During the first day of school you will receive an email and call from the teacher to help you set up your computer for online learning. Plans for the 2020-2021 school year have been rapidly changing, so in this newsletter, we have included the most up to date information.  As more details come, we will notify you via phone call and email.  In addition, we will be hosting monthly parent meetings to get feedback and answer questions. These meetings will be in collaboration with Sahnica Washington, Mr. Ali and our bilingual instructional assistants.  Our instructional assistants will lead affinity groups in your home language to ensure better communication with all of you. Our first opportunity to meet will be on August 27th at 5:00 p.m. Please join us for an online parent meeting using Zoom.  We will send the zoom information via email.

Over the summer we hired some amazing educators. Please join me in welcoming our new staff: Pia Dixon-Preschool Teacher, Keara Garcia-Stubbs-Preschool IA, Anna Karla Caunca-Preschool Special Education Resource Teacher, Chynna Phan-Kindergarten, Hannah Hutton-3rd grade, Muhiddin Hassen-bilingual IA and Lajoie Bradley-Art/Music Teacher.

As leaders of this amazing school we look forward to collaborating with our families to overcome the challenges we are facing during this pandemic. Thank you in advance for your support.

    Summer News

We had an amazing summer school with more than 150 students and close to 20 instructors working hard on their learning from July to mid-August. This is going to help prepare the students for the beginning of the year.

We want to thank all the families that participated and took time from their summer to work on their learning.

Neighborhood House is hosting a drive through Back to School Bash on August 28th from 12-4pm They will be giving away food, resources, and school supplies for preschool-12th grade students.

We are excited to announce that we have a new preschool in our building that every year will be taking students from our community and help get them ready for kindergarten and the West Seattle way.
We are excited to have our families participate in this program!

    End of the School Year

It was a crazy end to the school year with the virus changing our normal every day lives. We want to thank all our families and students for the effort they put into their learning. We were on track to have a very successful academic year.

Everyone made a great effort to adapt to remote learning.

We didn’t get a chance to say our goodbye’s in person and have our end of year celebrations but you were in our minds and hearts.

We had a heartfelt graduation ceremony with students coming to the building to pick up their certificates. This group of students deserved so much more as they were one of our highest performing groups in the school’s history. They outperformed the district in ELA and Math every year since third grade. We wish them well as they move on to middle school.
